This is a lot to read, but you are responsible for this information and will be submitting
a form stating that you have read and understand these statements.
Welcome to the Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council and the historic Vista Theatre. PAAC is a
community theatre, a supporter of local arts, and a non-profit arts organization. We own and
operate the Vista Theatre as a venue for community arts presentations. Since PAAC receives
very little funding from local and state governments, we rely on YOU to help us survive, through
membership, volunteer work, and on stage or backstage participation in productions.
PAAC
productions are open to all in the community. You do not have to be a member of PAAC to
participate, although we encourage you to join if you are interested in our mission.
The following guidelines have been established by the PAAC Board of Directors (the Board),
and apply to ALL participants in the organization and its productions. They will be enforced by
the Board, the Executive Director (E.D.), and the directors of individual productions.
PAAC productions involve people of all ages, children as well as adults. Therefore, appropriate
behavior and language are expected at all times. Lewd behavior and sexual harassment will not
be tolerated. Any behavior deemed inappropriate by the Board (including, but not limited to,
specific behaviors listed herein), will subject the violator to sanctions to be determined by the
Board. See also our Code of Ethics, below.
Drinks with spill proof or screw on tops, as well as food are permitted in the auditorium. Please
dispose of any trash you produce, using the appropriate containers. Do not leave trash in the
office area, auditorium, backstage, in the dressing rooms, or in the restrooms. If trash containers
are full, or if restroom supplies are needed, please notify your director or stage manager, or the
E.D.
Tobacco use is not permitted inside any PAAC building. Exceptions may be made by the Board
of Directors to meet the demands of a production. In such cases, smoking will be limited to
designated actors at appropriate times during rehearsals.
Tobacco use is permitted on PAAC property, outside of buildings, by persons of legal age, in
areas designated by the Board of Directors (normally the rear of the theatre and the office annex).
Byproducts must be disposed of in the appropriate receptacles.
Possession or use of alcohol is not permitted on PAAC property. Exceptions must have prior
approval by the Board of Directors, and must meet all conditions set by the Board. Violation of
this policy may result in the violators removal from current and future participation in PAAC
productions.
Possession or use of controlled substances is not permitted on PAAC property. Such possession
or use will be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency. Violation of this policy may
result in the violator’s removal from current and future participation in PAAC productions.
Stage machinery and equipment (including, but not limited to, curtains, the fly system, the
lighting equipment, and the sound equipment) are to be used only by persons designated by the
Director or Technical Director of a production. This machinery handled carelessly or
improperly, can cause injury or death. Designated persons must be trained by the appropriate
Board member or person designated by the Board before they operate the equipment.
All costumes, props, tools, scripts, music (printed or recorded), videos, and printed materials are
the property of or have been licensed to PAAC. Individuals are responsible for all materials
which have been issued to them. Lost or damaged rental materials will be charged to the person
responsible for them at the ratespecified in the rental/royalty contract. Other lost or damaged
materials will be charged to the person responsible for them at the replacement rate as approved
by the board. Such materials must be returned to the designated person or persons on the date
announced, generally at the end of the show's run. Any exception must be approved in advance
by the Board.
The Director of a show will not be paid until all rental scripts are turned in or accounted for. The
Music Director of a show will not be paid until all rental scores are turned in or accounted for.
Designers and crew heads will not be paid until all receipts and remaining advanced money are
turned in.
The PAAC office and Thrift Shop has posted hours and the theatre has hours of operation. These buildings are
not to be used as an after-hours hangout. Once performance, rehearsals, technical work, or
cleanup is complete, lights must be turned off and the building must be locked. The use of the
office, Thrift Shop, the theatre, or any PAAC property for PAAC activities outside of normal or posted hours
must be approved by the E.D. in advance of such use. The use of PAAC facilities for nonproduction
or personal activities is prohibited without the permission of the Board, and is subject
to any conditions the Board may set.
Please report any damaged items to your director or stage manager, or the E.D.
Code of Ethics for the Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council and the Vista Theater
Community theatre involves the volunteer talents and dedication of all those involved.
I will help where I can in all aspects of putting on a show or where the director needs help.
I will never miss a rehearsal or performance unless I schedule it in advance.
I shall act at every rehearsal and performance to the best of my ability, regardless of how small my role
or large my personal problems.
I will respect my audience regardless of size or station.
I shall never miss an entrance or cause a curtain to be late by my failure to be ready.
I shall forego all social activities which interfere with rehearsals and will always be on time.
I shall never leave the theatre/warmup or stage area until I have completed my rehearsal or
performance.
I shall remember that my aim is to create illusion, therefore, I will not destroy that illusion by appearing
in costume and make-up off stage or in front of the theatre before a performance.
I will not allow the comments of friends, relatives or critics to change any phase of my work without
proper authorization. I will not alter lines, business, lights, properties, settings, costumes or any phase
of the production without consultation with and permission from the director.
I shall accept the director's advice in the spirit in which it is given for he sees the production as a whole
and my role as a portion thereof.
I shall look upon the production as a collective effort demanding my demands of the play.
I will be patient and avoid temperamental outburst, for they create tension and serve no useful purpose.
I shall respect the play and the playwright, remembering that "A work of art is not a work of art until it
is finished."
I will accept artistic responsibility and shall never blame my co-workers or inanimate objects for my
own failure.
I will never engage in caustic criticism of another artist's work from jealousy or an urge to increase my
own prestige.
I shall inspire the public to respect me and my craft through graciousness in accepting both praise and
constructive criticism.
I will use the set, stage properties and costumes with care, knowing they are tools of my craft and a
vital part of the production.
I will observe backstage courtesy at all times while on PAAC property..
I shall never lose my enthusiasm for the theatre because of disappointment or failure for they are the
lessons by which I learn. I shall look upon my participation in a production as an educational
experience.
I will observe all other rules provided by PAAC.
I will meet all deadlines and responsibilities as assigned.
I will avoid behavior and talk that is detrimental to the well-being and reputation of PAAC, Community
Theatre in general, the Board of Directors and people in public.
I will attend the strike and carry out all duties assigned by my director or supervisor(s) to the best of my
ability.
I shall direct my efforts in such a manner that when I leave, the theatre will stand as a greater institution
for my having labored there.
I will follow Stanislavski's admonition to "love the art in yourself, not yourself in art!"
I realize that the following behavior is unprofessional and will result in my being dismissed from the
cast or crew:
One unexcused absence from a scheduled rehearsal or crew call.
Being late three times for scheduled rehearsals or crew calls.
Stealing, defacing, or destroying personal or PAAC property, including costumes, props, etc.
Any major violation of the Code of Ethics for PAAC
I accept the responsibility as a company member to monitor the above behavior and, if necessary, to
report a breach of conduct immediately to the Director, who may choose to dismiss the person in
question or it can be referred to the Ethics Committee. They will be the only one(s) who can dismiss a
cast, crew or other community theater member.
I understand that any cast or crew member who is dismissed has the right to appeal through the PAAC
Ethics Committee.
If I am borrowing or lent any items, especially for a play, I hereby agree that if I do not return the script, music, costumes, or other items lent to me, that I may be charged a fee.
By adding my name below to this form, it signifies that I have read and that I understand the PAAC rules and regulations, and I will abide by the Code of Ethics durning my involvement in a PAAC production, activity, or at times while I am volunteering.
